Biography

William Lionel Wyllie is now considered to have been one of the most significant figures in British marine art. Throughout his career, W.L.Wyllie’s art was focussed almost exclusively towards sailing and the sea. He was a keen yachtsman and during the First World War he served at sea with the Royal Navy. An accomplished original printmaker, he succeeded in capturing the true spirit of the open seas in a manner only challenged by the etcher Arthur Briscoe.
