A particularly beautiful signed proof in the completed state of the plate, from the only edition of about 30 impressions in total. Further inscribed by Roussel “Given to Miss M. Stevens. Th.Rl.” in pencil verso.

Born in Britanny and educated in Paris, Theodore Casimir Roussel moved to England in 1874 to set up his studio in Chelsea and it was here that he produced his remarkable body of printed works, including some of the most delightful topographical etchings of the area. Many of his finest plates reflect the early influence of J.A.McN. Whistler. Whistler, who is known to have had a high regard for Theodore Roussel as a follower of his style, had sought the Frenchman out, first meeting him in 1885. It was as a result of the friendship which ensued that T.C.Roussel was persuaded to commit himself fully towards printmaking. [more]
