Very good impression from the only edition of 50 signed and numbered proofs.
Hilary Paynter’s large and disturbing visual statement on the Klan is a remarkable demonstration in the subtle handling of very faintly broken areas of black ink, to create an image of manacing power. She has used only the faintest perforation of the surface of the block to create minute white dots which, collectively, give form and texture to the wall of shrouded figures advancing towards the viewer. Campo Santo Klan is at once an inspired, inventive and modern wood engraving.
Hilary Paynter is one of the leading figures of the talented group of wood engravers to emerge from Portsmouth between 1955 and 1964. Her extensive studies in psychology would seem to be reflected in the somewhat disquieting nature of this image.
