This image of An Egyptian Palace displays William Walcot’s impressive pictorial vision at its height with the solemn and massive architecture of ancient Egypt spread before us in a spacious vista and given tangible scale by the figures which people its steps. William Walcot’s imaginative plates of this sort were the most sought-after of all of his designs during his lifetime. These flights of fantasy into the world of ancient Egypt and its pharaohs are without comparison during the whole of the British Etching Revival. They are masterly works showing visions of architectural splendour brought to life through the artist’s imaginative draughtsmanship and inspired use of printmaking techniques.
On cream wove paper, watermarked J Whatman 1922, with full margins and deckle edge. Small brown stain in outer margin, otherwise very fine original condition. |
