Original Marius Bauer etching.
Very fine impression as first issued in 1894. From the edition of 200 signed proofs issued as part of the series of etchings which Bauer designed for Akëdysséril, by P. Villiers de l’Isle Adam.
Bauer’s highly creative etched illustrations designed for Akëdysséril mark the peak of his extravagant imaginary visions of the orient. Although Bauer had soon followed his trip to Constantinople with a journey to Egypt and Palestine, he had not yet travelled as far as India and his images of the Indian sub-continent and the Far East were, at this time, still based on his own imaginative interpretations of the many books he had read. In light of this, these etchings represent his most elaborate fantastical inventions.
On thick simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition.
