The striking use of light throughout this etching recalls the early printed works of C.R.W. Nevinson produced around the time of the First World War, though here the drama of the effect has been transposed to the passing glories of industrial landscape rather than those of War.
This aerial view shows the landscape near to Etruria, namely Cliffe Vale (the home of the Twyford potteries) and the area of the Hanley Deep coal mine. Hanley Deep Pit was opened in 1854. It was the deepest pit in the North Staffordshire coalfield, reaching a depth of 1500 feet. At its peak in the 1930s it employed some 2000 men and boys often producing 9000 tons of coal a year. The pit was closed in 1962.
On heavy cream wove paper with full, though narrow, margins. Mild time tone, otherwise very good condition. |
