Robert Gibbings was one of the most gifted book illustrators of his generation. Gibbings had first mastered the technique of wood engraving as a means of illustration as it would
reproduce better than pen and ink drawings by mechanical means. He became fascinated by the art of the book as a whole, matching his head-pieces and tail-pieces to text with meticulous care.

This engraving was designed as an illustration for the Limited Editions Club three volume edition of Malory's Le Morte d' Arthur. The series of wood engravings which Gibbings made for this work was one of the rnost important commissions which the artist was to receive after he retired from his ownership of the famous Golden Cockerel Press. Striking in its simplicity and economy of line, this fine engraving shows Gibbings's absolute mastery of his art.
