Original William Walcot etching with drypoint and aquatint.
Very fine signed proof impression printed with tone. From the only edition of 75 proofs, as issued by the Fine Art Society of London in 1929.
This marvellous depiction of the church of St. Mary-le-Strand is a significant advance on William Walcot's earlier interpretation of this scene back in 1919. In this later version, the church stands lofty and serene, surrounded by the bustle of everyday life - a noisy tumult in which the the motor car is now prominent.
Provenance: From the collection of the famous actor Sir Basil Rathbone, K.B.E. (1892 – 1967). Best known for his role of Sherlock Holmes in fourteen Hollywood films made between 1939 and 1946, Basil Rathbone made his first appearance in London at the Savoy Theatre on 9 July 1914, as Finch in The Sin of David - the theatre is only a few yards walk from the spot shown in Walcot's etching.
On cream laid paper with margins. Mild time tone within mat window area, otherwise very fine original condition. |
