Very good signed proof impression with strong etched line.
The highly accomplished printmaker Gwendoline Marie May was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and was a skilled wood engraver and watercolourist. She lived in Muswell Hill in north London and many of her etchings depict scenes of the areas near her home. Aside from her few London views, she is known to have worked extensively in and around the areas of Stratford-upon-Avon and Mousehole in Cornwall; she also travelled to Spain and Portugal in search of subjects for her plates. She exhibited at the Royal Academy regularly in the pre-war years. Her etching and aquatint of Largo do Carmo, Lisbon was a presentation plate for The Print Collectors Club in 1958; an example is in the permanent collection of he Victoria & Albert Museum, London (accession no. E.5439-1958). This beautifully handled etching of Milking Shed is one of the most elaborate of her fine rural plates.
Each year the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and Engravers holds The Gwen May Trust Award set up to assist in the promotion and teaching of the skill and art of etching and engraving by traditional means. The award offers a two year Student Membership plus £1000 each to two recent printmaking graduates.
On cream wove paper with full margins. One small and totally unobtrusive varnish spot at lower right corner, otherwise very fine original condition. |
