Original Augustus John etching.

Excellent impression printed with tone; signed by Augustus John with his full signature, “Aug. E. John”. From the only published edition of 25 signed proofs, as issued in 1906. Titled and numbered with edition and plate numbers in ink by Knewstub, Augustus John’s publisher.

Girl with a Sack is one of Augustus John's early figurative plates, dating from his first period of etching, prior to the end of 1905. Signed by the artist in pencil, “Aug. E. John” and inscribed in ink by the publisher, Knewstub, “Plate No.56 Girl with a Sack Print No.4”. As with all of Augustus John’s early plates, this etching was not published in a formal edition until issued by Knewstub through his Chenil Gallery in 1906, when this proof was printed. The plate was cancelled immediately after this edition had been printed.

Girl with a Sack shows the characteristic freedom of handling which is seen so often in Augustus John’s ink and pencil drawings.

On pale cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Stamped Made in England at edge of sheet verso. Evidence of previous mounting at extreme upper edge of sheet verso, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent.
