Rare – one of only 20 impressions ever printed from this early plate. Superb early proof impression, printed in warm toned black ink, with the etched lines strong and crisp.

This early landscape was drawn by James McBey directly onto the plate on 12th August 1910. Hardie gives the date of this plate, incorrectly, as 17 August as the impression from which he was working was far less richly inked in the area of the inscription than the present example (see illustration in Hardie’s catalogue raisonné, plate 65). In his inscription on both this plate and that of Amsterdam from Ransdorp, JamesMcBey mis-spelled the name of the town as ‘Runsdorp’, an error which was perpetuated by many early collectors of his works.

Provenance: Collection of R. Skinner, Esq., by whom purchased at James McBey’s first exhibition, held at the Gallery of Messrs. Goupil & Co., 25 Bedford St, London, in November 1911.

On antique laid paper from an old ledger or book, with full margins. Very fine original condition. Image surface excellent.
