The disused tin mines which can still be found along the coastline of Cornwall have a solitary drama all of their own. Levant Mine at Pendeen was a thriving tin and copper mine for over a hundred years, between 1820 and 1930. Now owned by the National Trust it houses the world's only Cornish beam engine still operated by steam on its original site. In this small drypoint, drawn long before the Trust restored parts of the site, Hughes has encapsulated what then remained of an all but forgotten industry. The abandoned buildings and the tall chimneys stand as forlorn monuments to a once proud industrial past.
