Tobacco products formed an important part of Bristol's economy for many years. Three large and monumental, red-brick bonded warehouses have dominated the entrance to the harbour since they were built between 1906 and 1919; this is probably the interior of one of them. Tobacco barrels are easily identied by their shape and size – straighter in construction, without bowed and metal-bound sides, and much larger than the average wine or sherry barrel.

Alexander Heaney exhibited an impression of this etching at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1922 and also at the Bristol Savages Club in the same year. An impression is held in the collection of Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, reference M4172.

On heavy cream wove paper with full margins and deckle edge. Time toned in margins and verso, otherwise generally very good original condition.

Provenance: From the collection of Phyllis Heaney, the artist’s daughter – thence by descent to her granddaughter.
