Excellent signed proof impression printed by D.Y. Cameron from the freshly completed plate. The total edition printed from this plate, in all four states, is thought to have been no more than about 40 impressions.
One of the towering figures of the Etching Revival, the famous Scottish printmaker, Sir David Young Cameron developed his own totally unique approach to etching and drypoint, characterised by an extraordinary economy of line and brilliant simplicity of composition. In particular, it was in the open mountainous scenes of his native Scottish landscape, such as Hills of Tulloch, that Cameron’s genius was fully realised.
As his career progressed, D.Y. Cameron moved away from detailed architectural subjects, choosing instead expansive landscape scenes of the Scottish highlands drawn with an ever increasing use of drypoint. Hills of Tulloch is amongst the finest of these sweeping views.
D.Y. Cameron chose an impression of Hills of Tulloch as one of his exhibition pieces at The Society of Twelve in 1915.
On antique laid paper, watermarked H Salmon 1807, with full margins. Mat line in outer margins, otherwise very fine original condition. |
