Very good signed proof impression with bright contrast, from the only edition of 75 signed and numbered proofs.

George Mackley specialised in wood engravings of waterways and their bridges. He grew up in Kent and the River Medway ran along the bottom of his family's garden. He had made his first boat with his brother, constructed by hand in their bedroom, and from an early age they sailed recklessly between Tonbridge and the Thames Estuary. The pleasure of these memories is reflected clearly in elements of this image. George Mackley has used his skills to the full in this beautiful wood engraving, achieving an extraordinary variety of both texture and tone throughout the design.

On smooth cream wove paper, with full margins. Some time tone in outer margins and verso, otherwise very good original condition.
