Original Arthur Briscoe etching.

The artist’s master proof impression, printed with considerable plate tone. Excellent impression with particularly strong etched line. This was the final proof printed prior to printing the normal numbered edition of 75 impressions, inscribed in pencil at lower left corner of sheet “Master proof”.

The leadsman had the task of checking the depth of the water using a hand held rope which was marked with knots or pieces of material tied at intervals to indicate a given number of fathoms. Briscoe’s etching shows the leadsman secured to the boat by a harness, swinging the lead weight which will carry the marked measuring rope to the bottom as the vessel proceeds cautiously through the surrounding fog.

On cream laid paper watermarked C. Brenchley 1814, with full margins and deckle edge. Mild time tone within mat window area, otherwise generally very good original condition.
