Original Arthur Briscoe etching.
Excellent impression with strong line and printed with tone; from the only edition of 75 signed and numbered proofs.
At the Tiller is one of Arthur Briscoe’s finest etchings and it was clearly one of Hurst’s favourites: “of this picture, no more can be said than: ‘Look and keep on looking’. It is one of those rare plates which depict a variety of action yet which are, at the same time, intensely restful to the eye. Everything is there: the impression of the trawler’s wake: the strength of her construction; the pull of the mizzen, the very flight of the following, screaming gulls.” (Arthur Briscoe – Marine Artist his life and work by A.A. Hurst, 1974, p.217) The subject of this etching was suggested to Briscoe by his publisher and at 12 guineas apiece in 1929 it proved to be one of his most successful plates.
On warm cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Old paper tapes at extreme edges of sheet. Mild time tone to sheet and some slight foxing, otherwise generally good original condition. |
