Very good impression printed with carefully wiped plate tone. From the only edition of 75 signed and numbered proofs.
Arthur Briscoe loved the Cutty Sark and he depicted her in all the moods of the sea in one medium or another. Here, she is seen driving through the Westerlies with reefed upper topsails, overhauling the vessel ahead which is under shorter canvas.
The famous clipper ship Cutty Sark was built on the Clyde in 1869. Under the command of Captain Richard Woodget she piled up racing records which won her lasting fame for her powers of speed and endurance. After success as a ‘flyer’ in the China tea trade, she became a wool carrier from Australia to London, managing the run in 73 days, an astonishing feat for a commercial sailing vessel. Indeed, in 1889 the Cutty Sark outran the famous Pacific steamer S.S. Britannia on the voyage to Port Jackson, arriving half an hour ahead of the steam powered vessel. The Cutty Sark’s fame saved her from the breakers and she is now preserved in permanent drydock at Greewich in London on public display.
On cream laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Mat line and mild time tone in outer margins, otherwise very good original condition. |
