Original etching by J.A.McN. Whistler.
Very good impression printed with considerable plate tone. The sixth and penultimate state, prior to removal of the foulbiting surrounding the figure and before the plate was polished to clean the blank background.
One of Whistler’s first etchings, this delicately handled work portrays the young Annie Haden, daughter of the famous printmaker Francis Seymour Haden. It is testament to Whistler’s genius with the etching needle that he should have produced so fine a portrait as this so early in his career as an original etcher.
On antique laid paper with full margins and deckle edge. Mild time tone within mat window area, otherwise generally very good original condition.
