Very good signed proof impression with strong line and pronounced burr. From only edition of 76 signed and numbered proofs.
This view of Boulogne Harbour was made from the top floor of the Hotel Richmond where James McBey was staying with the etcher Martin Hardie during a brief period of leave whilst serving in the First World War. This is the sole etching from the period prior to James McBey’s appointment as an official war artist which did not depend on thumbnail sketches (as all sketching was prohibited to prevent spying), but was drawn directly upon the plate from the privacy of their hotel room.
On warm white laid paper, with fleur-de-lys watermark, with full margins. Mild mat line in outer margins of sheet, otherwise very good original condition. Image surface excellent. |
