Unique pen and ink drawing touched with white highlight alterations.

This busy scene of merchants and buyers at a fruit and vegetable market in the mid-1930’s conveys the rich variety of characters who people the scene. It is possible that Sheila Girdwood prepared this carefully worked drawing as a detailed preparatory draft for a planned etching of the subject.

On smooth ‘china’ surfaced drawing board with full margins. One short tear in outer righthand margin, otherwise generally good original condition. Laid on original backing sheet, as prepared by the artist. Inscribed in ink by the artist on the reverse of the backing sheet “Mrs. S. Connelly 5, Sidney Avenue London N.13.”

Sheila Girdwood exhibited under both her maiden name and her married name, Mrs. S. Connelly.
