Particularly fine trial proof impression of the completed state of the etching. An especially fine example with beautiful clarity of line. A proof taken prior to the main edition of 76 impressions, inscribed by Brockhurst in pencil "Trial" and signed subsequently with the artist's somewhat rambling later signature.
The outstanding portrait of Anaïs Brockhurst, the artist’s first wife, this magnificent plate must be considered one of G.L. Brockhurst’s definitive achievements as an etcher and is a stunning display of consummate craftsmanship. Entirely self-taught in the art of etching, Brockhurst perfected a form of stipple-like technique through which he achieved an astonishing finish which remains unsurpassed in its brilliance.
As the title infers, the true subject of this etching is the elaborate dress worn by Anaïs, rather than the model herself. The artist has delighted in every variety of texture, from silk, lace and feather to the model’s skin and long flowing hair and even to the cold porcelain of the vase beyond, in order to display his absolute mastery of etching technique.
On cream wove paper with full margins. Faintest trace of discolouration in outer lower margin, otherwise very fine original condition. |
