The ancient cities and temples of India provided the inspiration for E.S.Lumsden’s finest etched works. Widely travelled, especially throughout the orient, E.S.Lumsden produced 348 recorded plates. The Shrine stands as one of the most dramatic of these beautifully observed topographical etchings. Lumsden was especially moved by the solemn magnificence of the Tibetan monasteries of Ladak – and here we see the fruit of this inspiration. Worked in much more detail than the majority of E.S.Lumsden’s etched plates, The Shrine remains the outstanding monumental interior to emerge from his so-called ‘Third Indian and Ladak Set’.

On cream laid paper, watermarked Stacey Wise 1885, with full margins and deckle edge. Evidence of previous mounting at extreme edges of sheet, otherwise generally very good original condition.
