Original D.Y. Cameron etching.

Extremely rare. Rinder catalogued this etching as existing in only “very few impressions” and impressions are now exceptionally scarce.

Superb trial proof impression of this richly worked Scottish subject, printed in dark brown ink with considerable plate tone. This outstanding early trial proof has been printed using great pressure on the printing press, in order to show the artist every detail of the progress of his etched work. At this stage the etching appears just completed and has printed with unusual strength and clarity.

The image shows the towers of Old Rowallan Castle, built by John Muir in 1562, near Kilmarnock in Ayrshire. In 1901 the castle and its estate were sold to new owners who constructed the present Rowallan Castle to the west of the old stronghold depicted in this etching.

On fine Japan paper, with full margins. Excellent original condition, though with stretched undulations in the printed area of the sheet due to the pressure of printing.
