Original Tom Chadwick wood engraving.
Outstanding signed proof impression with strong, even blacks and fine clear detail. Although the intended edition was to be 60 proofs, only a very few were printed. Few of Tom Chadwick’s editions were ever completed and most of his prints are now so rare as to be almost unobtainable. This proof is inscribed in pencil by the artist with marginal framing notes for a Mrs. Robson.
Tom Chadwick exhibited an impression of The Introduction at the Society of Wood Engravers in 1935, when he was just 20 years old. In 1936 Tom Chadwick was awarded a medal and the first prize by the Art Institute of Chicago for this wood engraving at the Fifth International Exhibition of Lithography and Wood Engraving at Chicago.
A truly remarkable piece of original wood engraving, especially for one so young, The Introduction depicts cockfighters on the island of Bali presenting their combatants to one another.
On smooth cream simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition. |
