Original E.J. Detmold etching.
Outstanding impression printed in dark brown ink with selectively wiped plate tone. A superb early impression of this large etching, signed in pencil by the artist and dated 1900 for display at the first major public exhibition of the twin brothers’ work, held at the Fine Art Society in May that year.
The largest and most ambitious plate yet to have been undertaken by Edward Julius Detmold, Off to the Fishing Grounds is perceived as the companion piece to Charles Maurice Detmold’s Duel in the Air. These two etchings show the remarkable parallel nature of the twins’ work – they are of almost identical dimensions, both depict herons in flight, and both works are of similar composition. However, this etching by Edward Julius Detmold was considered to be far the more successful of the two works and Duel in the Air remained unpublished.
The plate of this etching was too large for the Detmolds’ own printing press at their home; consequently, the printing of this work had to be entrusted to the outstanding plate printer of the age, Frederick Goulding. Goulding’s expertise is immediately apparent in the quality of this particular proof impression with its carefully wiped and highly effective plate tone.
On cream simile Japan paper with full margins. Faint mat line in outer margins, otherwise very fine original condition. Image surface excellent. |
