This small coastal scene displays Marjorie Firth’s white-line technique of wood engraving with particular clarity. This approach to printmaking requires the artist to describe their subject in terms of the light catching planes, instead of the shadows. Thus, the artist-engraver works from dark to light rather than vice versa – precisely the opposite approach to normal etching or engraving on metal.

Excellent impression on fine simile Japan paper with full margins. One or two isolated foxing spots at extreme outer edge of sheet, otherwise excellent original condition.
