Very good signed proof impression of this distinctive colour etching, printed in green, yellow and black inks. Inscribed in pencil by the artist with title and story details, from the only edition of 50 signed and numbered proofs.
The South African etcher and engraver Dolf Rieser was trained initially as a scientist and engineer. Dolf Rieser was first instructed in the art of engraving by Joseph Hecht, soon after his arrival in Paris and attended the pioneering avant-garde workshop of S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17. Through his connections with John Buckland Wright, who was working at Atelier 17 during the 1930’s, and through the founder of the Atelier, S.W. Hayter, much of Dolf Rieser’s original work found its way to England. The majority of his work is based on the theme of animal and bird forms, inspired by African tribal art. Dolf Rieser was almost invariably assisted by Joseph Hecht in the printing of his plates.
This colour printed etching of Pursuit relates to the story of N’gebule, a legendary princess who turned into a fabulous bird.
On cream laid French paper with full margins and deckle edge. The pressure under which this proof was printed has caused some distortion to the sheet. Short nick in outer margin at extreme right edge of sheet, otherwise generally good original condition. |
