Superb impression with particularly rich mezzotint burr and full tonal range. An especially fine signed proof impression on applied India paper, aside from the normal published edition of 250 impressions on Japan paper.

One of Frank Short’s finest mezzotint works after Turner. Sir Frank Short made more mezzotints after the work of J.M.W. Turner than any other artist. Indeed, the greatest undertaking of all of Frank Short’s printed work was to extend and complete Turner’s Liber Studiorum as it had been projected originally by the great artist. This comparatively large mezzotint engraving was made as an independent plate and not as part of a series. It is particularly uncommon to see so fine an impression on applied India paper, rather than the normal issue on Japan paper.

Frank Short’s splendid mezzotint engraving was based upon the painting in oils by J.M.W. Turner in the collection of the Duke of Westminster.

On warm white India paper applied to original wove backing sheet, with margins, as issued. Sheet discoloured verso (not visible from front surface), otherwise very good original condition. Image surface excellent.
