Original J.S. Cotman soft ground etching.
Very fine, impression from the first edition, as published for the large paper issue of J.S.Cotman’s Liber Studiorum in 1838.
John Sell Cotman’s soft ground etchings are some of the most personal and evocative examples of his printed works. They are thought to date from a wide period between the years 1808 and the late 1820’s. Impressions of some subjects have been traced to the years 1815 and 1824, but beyond this they cannot be dated with any certainty. The plates were never published by J.S.Cotman himself; the impression offered here is from the first published edition, issued under the title Liber Studiorum; a series of Sketches and Studies by John Sell Cotman, Esq., by H.G. Bohn in 1838.
John Sell Cotman exhibited an impression of this romanticised view of Whitby, one of the finest of his soft ground etchings, as an example of his projected publication at the 1824 exhibition of the Norwich Society (no.171).
On warm cream wove paper with wide margins. Some foxing mostly in outer margins, otherwise very fine original condition. |
