Etching by Hubert von Herkomer, after the design by Frederick Walker.

Excellent pencil signed proof impression with the remarque portrait of Frederick Walker, before the engraved lettering.

Hubert Herkomer long acknowledged his debt to Frederick Walker as the artist who pioneered the form of social realism which Herkomer himself was to pursue throughout his career.

Frederick Walker was born the son of a jewellery designer in London and became an apprentice to Whymper, the engraver, in 1858. He soon began to illustrate for the Dalziel brothers and this image of Thanksgiving first appeared as a wood engraving in one of their magazine illustrations for 1862. Walker later worked this image up into an oil painting. Frederick Walker depicted true contemporary Victorian life, always showing a deep concern for the underprivileged. He is regarded by some as the creator of the English Renaissance, for it was he who saw the possibility of combining the grace of the antique with the realism of our everyday life in England. Walker died at the age of just 35 in 1875.

Hubert von Herkomer’s large and elaborate etching is one of the finest examples of true Victorian genre printmaking.

On cream wove paper with full margins. Generally very good original condition. Image surface excellent.
