Along with W.E.C. Morgan, Stanley Anderson, and Stephen Gooden, Harry Morley was one of a small group of highly accomplished engravers who re-introduced the technique of original line engraving into this country during the 1920’s. Unlike his contemporaries, Harry Morley followed the tradition of the early Italian engravers and often repeated his earlier paintings in his engraved works.

Classical figures with Bacchus and Goats is one of the most elaborate and technically refined of Harry Morley's original line engravings. He has achieved the subtle modelling of the splendid statuesque figures through careful cross-hatching and a form of stipple technique which displays his consummate skill as an engraver. This engraving is a particularly fine example of the form of symbolic classical subject which Harry Morley favoured most in his engraved work.

From the collection of Neil Green, Esq., with his collector’s stamp at lower right outer corner of sheet.

On cream wove paper, with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition.
