Artist’s trial proof impression, aside from the published edition. This particular trial proof impression has been printed under considerable pressure to bring out every detail of a freshly worked plate.
Born in Ireland, the daughter of Sir Frederick Hughes of Rosslare Fort, Wexford, Myra Kathleen Hughes moved to London to study at Westminster School of Art and at the Royal College of Art where she was trained in the techniques of etching and engraving by Frank Short and Constance Pott. Elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1911, she exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Paris Salon. M.K.Hughes's detailed topographical etchings are characterised by their fineness of line in a manner reminiscent of the work of her teacher Constance Pott. This particular etching shows Seaford, in Sussex, which was the regular haunt of her main instructor in etching, Frank Short – many of whose printed works depict the area around this small town on the southern coast of England.
On cream laid O.W.P paper, with full margins and deckle edge. Some distortion to sheet due to the exceptional pressure used in printing this particular trial proof. One tear and some minor discoloration in left hand outer margin, otherwise generally good original condition. |
