Original Eric Gill wood engraving.

Very good impression, as published by Douglas Cleverdon in 1929.

Girl Sleeping was one of the original wood engravings designed by Eric Gill as illustrations for the Golden Cockerell Press edition of The Song of Songs, published in 1925, although this version of the design was not used in the eventual publication. In this beautiful wood engraving Gill has conveyed both grace and eroticism with a delightful simplicity which is characteristic of his strikingly stylised work.

On smooth cream wove paper with wide margins. Minor foxing at extreme edge of sheet, otherwise very fine original condition.
