Original Stephen Gooden line engraving.

Extremely rare unpublished line engraving. One of only three or four proof impressions ever printed from this plate. Inscribed in pencil “To Derrick, Sept.17 1941”.

Excellent signed proof impression with crisp, sparkling line. Pekingese No.1 is one of the most scarce of all of Stephen Gooden’s original line engravings. This plate was never published in any edition and only a handful of impressions were ever printed (Campbell Fine Art sold one of these other impressions in 1994). Stephen Gooden repeated this subject later in the same year with his smaller plate entitled Pekingese No.2, which is also very scarce. It is possible that some accident befell this plate as it is undoubtedly the finer of the two works, displaying the most outstanding precision of line.

On cream laid paper with margins. Mat line in outer margins. Time toned verso, otherwise very good original condition. Image surface excellent.
