Original Gertrude Hermes wood engraving.
Very fine impression, from the only edition of 30 signed proofs. Proofs of this wood engraving are now rare as all of the wood blocks which Gertrude Hermes engraved prior to 1928, along with many of the signed proof impressions, were destroyed when the river Thames flooded her basement studio flat on 7th January 1928. This early flower subject was designed and released as an independent print.
Engraved during 1926, this work mark the beginning of one of the most important phases of Hermes’ career - she was to spend the next five years engaged almost exclusively upon the wood engraved depiction of flower forms.
Tulips was engraved in the year that Gertrude Hermes married the famous wood engraver Blair Hughes-Stanton; however, unlike her husband, Hermes invariably continued to develop her works around their sculpturesque form, rather than through intricate pattern alone. Their marriage was not a success and they separated in 1931.
