Original John Buckland Wright wood engraving.

One of only 12 proofs pulled from this block (the intended edition of 30 impressions was never completed).

This engraving was originally commissioned by the YMCA but was not purchased by them, as it was deemed inappropriate. Excellent impression with strong black line.

Upon the outbreak of war John Buckland Wright and his wife fled from Paris to England, arriving with only 10 shillings between them. They soon found a place in London and after a number of different military appointments, John Buckland Wright was appointed as Censor in Charge with Reuters. As a result he had first hand experience of the Blitz in London. He made only four wood engravings recording scenes of the war, of which Shelter No.I was the first. The image shows four young London women taking refuge in the underground railway system. It would be hard to find a greater contrast with Henry Moore’s treatment of this theme!

On fine simile Japan paper with full margins and deckle edge.
