Particularly strong impression with pronounced etched line, from the only edition of 45 signed proofs (50 in all).
The Mouth of the Stour is a fine example of Martin Hardie’s pure etched work, prior to his first experiments with the drypoint needle. Drawn directly onto the plate, near Manningtree, on the border between Suffolk and Essex, this image shows the view reversed from nature.
Aside from his considerable output as an etcher and watercolourist, Martin Hardie was an important writer and cataloguer on the prints of the British Etching Revival, producing the leading catalogues on the works of Sir Frank Short, James McBey and others.
On cream laid paper, watermarked F J Head & Co, with margins. Very faint time tone within mat window area, otherwise very fine original condition. |
