Original Catherine Fanshawe etching.
Rare original etching by Catherine Maria Fanshawe.
This image derives from the heroic ‘Scottish’ legends of Ossian, as set forth in the writings of James Macpherson - whose works had caused a sensation, especially with patriotic Scots, when they first appeared during the 1760’s. The quotation given by Miss C.M. Fanshawe at the base of the plate reads: “C….’s eyes have failed. Is thy strength like thy Father’s Ossian? Let the aged feel thine Arm. I gave my Arm to the King. He felt it with his aged Hands. Ossian. Vol: 1st”.
On off-white wove paper, trimmed just within the platemark. Generally very good original condition. |
