Very fine impression from the small first published edition, as issued by Thomas Worlidge’s widow.
The 1750’s, when Thomas Worlidge was living in London, were his most productive years as a portrait etcher and his works from this period, such as A Dutch Consul, show him at the height of his printmaking ability. After Thomas Worlidge died, his widow remarried and continued to sell his etchings privately. It is extremely difficult to assess the exact date of printing of many of Worlidge’s works as the majority of his portrait plates were not retouched (unlike his studies of antique gems). This is a particularly fine example of his widow’s edition, prior to the issue of fifty of his plates by C.G. Dyer.
On cream laid antique paper with thread margins. Evidence of previous mounting at edge of sheet verso, otherwise very good original condition. |
