Superb signed proof impression of this scarce unpublished plate.
This impressive interior view of the Albert Hall in London is amongst the largest of Francis Sydney Unwin’s etchings. The image shows a concert in progress with the orchestra seated at the foot of the great organ. Above the seated audience stand further spectators under the arched apertures of ‘the gods’. F.S.Unwin’s view does not to concentrate upon just the orchestra itself but has captured a far grander vision encompassing the whole of the magnificent spectacle. The viewer’s eye is not left to linger upon the details of the event alone but is drawn upwards, towards the extraordinary canopy and scaffold which hang suspended from the vast domed roof of the great Victorian concert hall.
The Albert Hall is one of the most striking of all of Francis Sydney Unwin’s architectural etchings, displaying the vigorous handling characteristic of his very finest works.
On cream simile-Japan paper with margins as prepared by the artist. Some minor natural creasing and some discolouration to sheet, otherwise very good original condition. |
