Original Fredrick Carter etching.
Frederick Carter’s first known etching, made on the back of an engraved copper plate for a business card. An extremely rare early proof impression, signed in pencil by the artist.
As a young artist, the highly talented Frederick Carter studied under Frank Short at the Royal College of Art and later in both Paris and Belgium. Despite this traditional training, Carter’s highly individual and strangely imaginative etchings hold an unique place in British printmaking history. Never a follower of fashion, Frederick Carter was a mystic of somewhat pagan ideals. He was fascinated by the capricious characters of the Italian Commedia dell’Arte and it is these symbolic actors who predominate throughout his early etched work. Here in Gigolette there is a quirky humour to the young comedienne as she takes her bow, characteristic of Frederick Carter’s strange and sometimes wayward etchings.
Frederick Carter’s etchings were but little circulated during his lifetime and most are still rare today. It is only recently that the entire body of Frederick Carter’s printed works have come to light once more, with the discovery of the artist’s own private collection and the subsequent production of a catalogue raisonne of his work.
On pale cream wove paper, with full margins. Very fine condition. |
