Original John Copley lithograph.
Very good impression from the only edition of 20 signed proofs, printed by the artist himself.
John Copley was one of the pioneering masters of lithography as an original art form in this country and was one of the founders of the Senefelder Club, becoming its first honorary secretary in 1910. Copley’s art remained both modern in style and highly innovative throughout his life. In particular, men at work, with muscles taught, intrigued him as both artist and observer. Raising Hammers is a fine example of Copley’s unique style and of his distinct portrayal of human form.
Copley printed the majority of his lithographs himself, often with the assistance of his wife, Ethel Gabain. He regarded the inking and printing of the stone as a continuation of the creative process, believing that only the artist himself can bring out the finest qualities in his own drawing. This excellent impression attests to this belief.
On warm white laid Van Gelder Zonen paper with margins, as issued. Mild foxing and some minor unobtrusive defects to sheet, generally very good original condition.
