Original Percival Gaskell aquatint.

Beautiful, impression of this highly atmospheric aquatint, with full tonal range. Signed proof, from the only published edition.

It is in this form of tranquil aquatint that Gaskell excels. The peaceful splendour of this scene has given this work the unique beauty which sets so many of Percival Gaskell’s designs apart from the other landscape prints of their generation. This artist possessed an unrivalled gift for interpreting nature in her more mysterious and enchanting moments - In Wharfedale is one of the most picturesque embodiments of these moods. The power of this work is through its quiet understatement, using the most simple of design to wonderful atmospheric effect.

This proof has been inked with particular care to produce the shimmering effect of sunlight catching the clouds and the rippled waters of the river in the valley below. The sheep, grazing quietly, complete the scene of a timeless and peaceful English landscape.

On cream wove paper with full margins. Very good original condition.
