The famous painter and writer on art, Sir William Rothenstein became established as a portrait painter soon after his training at the Slade in the late 1880's. Rothenstein made original lithographs for a period of only seven years - his first lithographs date from 1893 when he was commissioned to make a series of portraits which were printed by the lithographer Thomas Way. A number of fine lithographic portraits followed; however, being a highly successful and commercially minded artist, Rothenstein abandoned the medium by late 1900, devoting his time instead to the far more lucrative art of painting.
