The rare colour prints of William Monk come as a refreshing surprise after the labourious and heavily worked etchings which he produced on an annual basis of the London Calendarium and for which he is now best known. William Monk is known to have exhibited with the Society of Graver Printers in Colour, and was a member of the Colour Print Club, though his colour prints are so rare as to prompt one recent commentator to remark “colour prints by him are rarely if ever encountered” (Elizabeth Harvey-Lee, The Seductive Art. The British Passion for Etching 1850-1950, Oxfordshire, 2001). [more] |
