In original wood engraving, Lionel Lindsay was inspired by the example of Thomas Bewick and, consequently, the depiciton of birds became a natural subject matter. Lionel Lindsay would study each bird from life in order to convey some sense of its movement and character in his finished work. He would only revert to a stuffed specimen for detailed study of the feathers. However, unlike the great naturlalist Bewick, Lionel Lindsay saw birds purely as a motif for design.

Kookaburra is the most elaborate of all of Lionel Lindsay’s wood engraved studies of birds, showing a highly effective interplay of light and shade. In these works Lionel Lindsay delighted in the depiction of strong shadows in a manner not dissimilar to his drypoint images, but in reverse.

On firm simile Japan paper with margins. Very good condition.
