Excellent impression printed with delicate tone. From the only edition of 75 signed or stamped proofs.
Claude Allin Shepperson worked widely as a painter, book illustrator, etcher and lithographer. Shepperson's work is characterised by a distinct elegance and his figures invariably display an air of aristocratic refinement. This is particularly true of his large drypoint of Barnard Castle in which two elegant young ladies are seen taking a stroll to exercise their dog in countryside near the castle. There is a carefree vitality to this scene as one of the ladies stoops to pick up a ball, her dog bounding playfully by her side.
After C.A.Shepperson’s untimely death from pneumonia and pleurisy, his plates were printed under the directions of his executors until the intended editions of 75 impressions of each were completed. A monogram ‘CS’ was stamped by the artist’s executors on all such proofs. The plates were then destroyed. The present proof is numbered 62/75 and bears the executors’ blindstamp monogram.
On cream laid paper with very wide margins. Laid on board, otherwise very good original condition. |
