The Prodigal Son   c.1907

  Original etching.
Signed in pencil.
Ref: Hardie 4

Rare pencil signed proof impression of this scarce etching.

Very good, strongly inked impression of this early etched work. Although a total edition of 75 impressions was printed, pencil signed proofs of this etching are extremely uncommon.

One of Claude Allin Shepperson's earliest plates, etched while working under William Lee-Hankey at Goldsmiths’ College, The Prodigal Son depicts the stooping figure of the prodigal son, supported by his compasionate father, just after he has returned from his misspent adventures to his family home. On the left a serving girl carries “the best robe”.

On cream laid paper, watermarked F J Head & Co, with full margins and deckle edge. Very fine original condition.
