Excellent, early impression with strong line and fine contrast. As issued in Paul Sandby’s second series of Scottish Etchings and with the number in the plate.
Paul Sandby was one of the earliest exponents of original etching in this country. His first etchings date from the time when he was working as the chief draughtsman of the Ordnance Survey of Scotland (1747-1752). This view of Edinburgh dates from this period and was etched from nature, having been drawn directly on to the plate without the aid of a preparatory sketch.
Apart from its obvious topographical interest this print is an excellent example of Paul Sandby’s fine handling and romantic interpretation of landscape. Impressions of this etching from Paul Sandby’s first issue are exceptionally rare. This is a scarce early impression from the second published issue of this etching, printed on fine laid paper with the engraved number ‘6’ and the letter ‘M’, as issued in 1765.
